Missing Student: Hang Gong (Jeffrey)
At about midday on Monday, 6 April, 2009, six students from Nudgee International College were swimming at Surfers Paradise having travelled down there on a train and bus in a group. This was a non-school day for them.
The boys entered the water between the flags. Due to the strong current they began to drift and the lifeguards told them to get back, a direction they obeyed promptly. The boys commented that it was quite difficult to get back as the surf had become reasonably rough.
As soon as the boys noticed that Jeffrey was missing they informed the lifeguards.
The police have advised the College that the boys were acting correctly and obeying all directions appropriately. The lifeguards and the police then took prompt action to commence the search for Jeffrey.
The police contacted Nudgee International College and advised them that Jeffrey was missing. Two staff members immediately drove from Brisbane to Surfers Paradise in a bus to be with the remaining students and to assist the police with their enquiries.
The College then contacted the Homestay parents while the police were working with the Consulate to advise the parents in China. Subsequently the College, itself, contacted Jeffrey’s parents.
After the boys had completed their statements with the police, the College staff drove them back to the campus. In the meantime, the College had arranged for the Homestay parents of these boys to come to the College. At the College, the boys and Homestay parents were brought together by the College staff and, after appropriate discussions, the boys returned to their Homestays.
The College has arranged for counsellors to attend the College today. The staff have been briefed and are working with students today to discuss the events of yesterday.
A College inter-faith liturgy has been held this morning which involved all staff and students of the College. The College staff and students are being kept up-to-date with any further information that might come from the police.
It is anticipated that Jeffrey’s parents will come to Brisbane as soon as they can make the necessary arrangements.
Nudgee International College is still in term time and this will provide the opportunity for on-going support for the students over the coming days.
