Profile on NIC Graduate, Nana Ito

The months of November and December are sad for all here as we say goodbye to many graduates of Nudgee International College who have in turn graduated from our partner high schools. All these young people are special and are bravely taking the final step into their higher education pathway.

One such student; Miss Nana Ito came to NIC from Nagoya, Japan on a one year Study Abroad Program. Nana completed the required courses of English at NIC and studied the remaining of the year at Corpus Christi College. During this time Nana received top results in Year 10 achieving A grades and two B+ grades, one being for English study. This achievement is outstanding for the short time she has been here.

This academic success is not the only reason to profile Nana; during her time in Australia she has also assisted many students in settling into life here in Australia with ongoing encouragement and reinforcement in becoming a ‘big sister’ and a true friend to them. Her commitment and passion to fellow students from all nationalities and study in English has awarded her many accolades at Nudgee International College and Corpus Christi College. During this time Nana has also assisted a local Australian/Japanese family with teaching their child in Japanese. She has planned to have her Australian friends visit her in Japan in 2008.

Nana has forged a long lasting relationship with her homestay family; Mrs Maria Curcio (mum) and her homestay big sister, Connie Curcio who she will miss immensely on her return to Japan. We wish Nana every success in her return to her loving family that gave her the opportunity to come to NIC, to her return to study at her school in Nagoya, her continuing passion for English and being an ambassador for Japan and International Education

3．中学学位余额

5。最佳入学时间
今年一月入学的学生，我留意到一个现象。原计划就读20周语言，7月进入11年级第二学期的学生，如果英语测试在3级，那么就需要30周的语言，10月就读高中。但昆士兰教育规定，要获得高中毕业证书，必须读完一年半高中课程。所以这样的情况，学生会进入最后一个半月的10年级课程，第二年1月进11年级。但有的家长，学生没有心理准备，认为浪费了一年时间，但事实上，语言不过关，谈何取得高中的优异成绩进入理想的大学和专业。

所以希望对英语程度较弱的学生，尽量让他们在11月进入语言课程。

Camping trip to Moreton Island

What a weekend!

On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August, 40 students went for their first overnight camping trip to Moreton Island, which is located one hour off the coast of Brisbane. The weekend had plans of many activities including swimming, walking, exploring the island, sand boarding and snorkelling. On Saturday, all the students were excited beyond words about the adventure and on arrival at the campsite were anxious to explore. After setting up their beds in tents for the night, we all headed off in the 4-wheel drives to the island lookout. The 4-wheel drive along sand tracks, up hills and through water alone was exciting for many who had not experienced this before.

At the lookout point we saw whales playing in the ocean off the coast, swimming around each other, breeching out of the water, whale spouts everywhere! The water was so clear we could see turtles swimming close to the coast and dolphin pods further out. What a sight! After another short drive along the beach we found a sheltered beach for lunch and as you can see from the photos, many swam and played games on the beach.

After lunch, we were off to the sand boarding WOW, WHAT FUN!! Sand and smiles everywhere!

As the sun was setting we headed back to the camp site and just one kilometre from our destination, I spotted 4 dolphins swimming just off the beach. Naturally all the 4-wheel drives stopped and everyone rushed to the waters edge to see them! In a flash many of us were in the water and the dolphins played around us, coming in closer, just as inquisitive about us as were about them! Many of the students wanted to touch them but the dolphins teased us by swimming very close then off they would go! The dolphins played with each other, turning in the water and just giving us a show! It was nearly dark before we left the water, cold and excited by this amazing experience.

After a shower, dinner was enjoyed around a camp fire where we played games, sang songs and just talked - a big day for everyone!

On Sunday we woke to the sound of rain! Yes, the day turned cool, wet and windy but off we went to dig for 'pipis' on the other side of the island. No luck, so back to the camp for lunch and rest! The weather was bad so everyone just rested, talked, played more games and 'hung out' (some even studied) - a lovely time together.

After the ferry trip back to Brisbane, the students were all happy to be home as they were exhausted. Overall the weekend was fantastic! One student told me he has never been to such a beautiful place, all just one hour from our CBD!

NIC's Connection to Timor Leste

Interview with Brian Lewis, Head of School, Nudgee International College


When did NIC first become involved with East Timor?

Nudgee International College’s connection to East Timor commenced in 2002. At this time Education Queensland and Nudgee International College agreed to share the funding to sponsor 4 students (2 boys and 2 girls) form East Timor for English Language Education and High School. Following a period of English language instruction the two girls, Ester and Floriana attended Corpus Christi College and the two boys, Joao and Juliao attended Nudgee College.

Have you sponsored many East Timor students since that time?

Nudgee International College has sponsored a number of other students from East Timor. In my time at the college they have included two students in 2005, Teresina and Joana and last year Carlos. We have even had a priest, Father Domingos come to study at our College for a short time to improve his English proficiency.

Does the College still keep contact with the East Timorese students?

We kept in close contact with the four students we initially sponsored from East Timor. Indeed we assisted in obtaining scholarships for the students for Tertiary Education. It’s interesting that Ester is still studying for her teaching degree in Australia. Floriana completed a Diploma of Business and has returned home, John has also returned home after completing an Advanced Diploma in Engineering at South bank TAFE and Julio is currently doing a degree in Health Administration at QUT. Carlos still keeps in contact with the occasional letter and Julio comes to visit me occasionally to keep me up to date with all the latest news on the others.

Who is your main contact in East Timor (Timor Leste)?

Our main contact in Timor Leste is Brother Bill Tynan. Brother Bill heads a group called Communidade Edmund Rice. A group assisting the Timorese people made up of Br Bill and a community group of volunteers. This community group assists the Timorese in many ways including Education, Health, Lighting, Clothing and other fundraising activities through schools in Queensland.
At Nudgee International College we receive a regular newsletter from the Community and we share this with the staff of Nudgee International College.

Apart from providing English Language education to assist East Timorese students does NIC do anything else with East Timor?

Nudgee International College have conducted a few clothing drives. Indeed last week we just completed one. Our students, level 2 under the direction of staff, Ann Marie and Jacquie Sadi Brydon, packed and labelled the boxes. Level 3 helped me load them onto my trailer and Mary Davies from the Queensland Province and I took them out to the container yard and unloaded them.
We have also recently raised a few hundred dollars by way of a raffle and some jumpers we have sold to students. We expect Br Bill to visit on the 27th of September when we will pass over the cheque.

What benefits does NIC gain from being involved with East Timor?

There are so many benefits, where do I begin.
Firstly as an Edmund Rice Institute we feel our involvement has helped ground our values of assisting the less advantaged in a concrete and meaningful way our students can understand. We are about to introduce a values program into NIC and our connection in such activities as these will definitely be part of the program.
Our students from East Timor have really joined in the NIC community and we have really enjoyed their company. In particular they have joined us through presentations at our assemblies and joining in music performances with other students. It’s great when you see students from China, from Turkey and from East Timor, join together for a music jam session with no prompting and just having fun through music. This happened on our International Day earlier this year.

Anything else you would like to mention for this article?

Just to say thank you to all the staff and students for your ongoing support of Communidade Edmund Rice. In particular the recent clothing drive and raffle.

Dongha Kim Wins, CEO Loses

Dongha Kim, our youngest student beat Sangeeta Mahajan, NIC's CEO, 10-4 in an 'English Only in the Building' friendly challenge.

Dongha and Sangeeta started a game that required Dongha to be seen speaking English at all times at NIC. Over a two month period, Sangeeta caught Dongha speaking Korean only 4 times, though he quickly switched to English as soon as she spotted him unawares. After a long-drawn struggle from Sangeeta for points, Dongha won hands down 10:4.



Sangeeta acknowledged defeat at a student assembly and presented Dongha with the agreed prize of an assortment of chocolates. "This is one of the very few times in life that I am very happy to be the loser", she said.

Well done, Dongha! NIC is very proud of you.

NIC Study Tours: Age, no barrier to fun!!

On 1 July we welcomed a wonderful group of mature age Japanese students. While they only numbered 13 in total they had a memorable experience having English classes and activities including a trip to the Gold Coast, a City Tour and the many Aussie animals at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Homestay though was the highlight for most of them.

On 5 July we had a graduation ceremony and party and each student spoke about their appreciation for the kindness and welcome they were shown. Comments from our Homestay families also included statements like – “this was the best Homestay experience I have ever had!”. All in all it was a wonderful way to start the busy Study Tour season and we look forward to welcoming the group back in the future – we will all miss this wonderful group of people.

Study Your update!

We were delighted to welcome a Primary School from Hong Kong to NIC at the end of April. We hosted 40 students – 20 boys, 20 girls and 6 teachers/leaders. The group were only here for 8 days however we managed to include 5 specialised English classes, trips to Dreamworld, an Aboriginal Adventure, a visit to a local Primary school, an Aussie BBQ, a city tour, Movieworld and golf lessons with a PGA professional. The tour was a huge success and the Vice Principal rated the quality of the program as excellent, and the host families as helpful and caring. We look forward to welcoming the group back next year.



We are now preparing for a busy season in July/August where we are expecting to host around 1000 students!

Homestay Information Night.

Thank you to all the homestay families that attended the homestay information night on Tuesday 24th April at the college. It was great to meet some of the people that I had been talking with over the telephone for the last few months. I am sorry that I did not get to meet you all personally.
We appreciate the support and guidance that you give to our students.
Nudgee International College really does see our hometay families as a backbone to our business and we aim to keep the lines of communication open between ourselves, families and students.
In my experience most problems that students or families experience in homestay can be talked about and solved in a very satisfactory way. It may be a case of just pointing out that the college has guidelines of behaviour in homestay and the house has it's own set of rules. If you should feel that at any time that you are not enjoying the experience, please do not hesitate to call the college and speak with Barbara Doyle, our Accommodation Officer or myself.

NIC Board Director, Br Barry Buckley awarded the Fellowship of the Australian College of Educators

Nudgee International College congratulates Br Barry Buckley, Deputy Leader, St Francis Xavier Province for being awarded a Fellowship of the Australian College of Educators. We are privileged to have Br Barry as a Director on the Nudgee International College Board.

The ACE National Council recently announced their Fellows for 2007. These awards are granted to educators who have been judged by their peers to have made an outstanding contribution to education in Australia.

Brother Barry Buckley was awarded the Fellowship for an outstanding contribution to education within the non-government sector for over fifty years. As an experienced Headmaster and Religious Institute Trustee, he has shown remarkable dedication and quality service through school administration and system level governance.

Study Abroad Students Return Home

Amongst, many tears of sadness at farewelling homestay families and many friends, on Saturday, 31 April, 11 students from a girl’s school in Tokyo returned home after spending 12 weeks here in Brisbane. The students arrived in mid January and studied English for four weeks here at NIC. After which, five students attended Corpus Christi College and six attended St James College until the end of the first term of 2007.

Apart from the serious side of their studies, during their time in Brisbane they went on excursions with NIC and their homestay families, attended the International Students day in traditional dress and judging by the size and weight of their bags, went shopping, shopping and more shopping!

It was sad yet delightful to see them with the homestay families as they have made many friends for life during their stay. One student explained through her tears, that she loved her family, loved her school and her many new friends of different nationalities. This has been an opportunity and experience they will never forget.

Study Tour Update!

NIC Cocktail Function

Nudgee International College hosted a cocktail function 'Celebrating Internationalisation' on 1 March 2007. We were delighted to have with us some distinuished guests, overseas partnersm partner school Principals and staff, homestay families, industry colleagues and students.

Mike Christie, Chairman of NIC hosted the function and said that "NIC had come a long way in the last three years. NIC's recent achievements, in particular the inagural QETI Showcase awards were indicative of NIC's strengthened position in the industry".

Our Chief Guest for the night was Br Barry Buckley, Deputy Leader, St Francis Xavier Province. "A few years ago NIC set out to redesign itself and re-launch itself, with a strong commitment to its core values. The success that it currently enjoys and its good positioning in the marketplace is a testimony to just how well this has been done and how important it has been. I congratulate Sangeeta and the staff of NIC and the Board in achieving this" he said.

NIC's CEO, Sangeeta Mahajan, highlighted NIC's key achievements in 2006. "NIC had achieved 25% growth in 2005, followed by a phenomenal 30% growth in 2006, in a downward trending market in Australia" she said.

Agent Familiarisation Tour

As part of the 'Celebrating Internationalisation' Week at Nudgee International College, some of our overseas partners joined us for an Agent Familiarisation tour. We were delighted to have our friends visit us at this time of the year and it was a great pleasure to show them around NIC and our partner schools. As usual Brisbane and old Coast turned on the famous sunshine in the smart state.

International Students' Day 2007

Culture, Food, Music bonanza at Nudgee International College as students and the local community enjoyed the company of friends from Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, East Timor, India, Fiji, Turkey, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany and Australia.

The International Week was a fantastic opportunity for cultural immersion and understanding and our students and visitors thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to engage with world cultures.

Reconnecting Humanity

Daniel Rechnizer, the keynote speaker at Nudgee International College Cocktail Function, 'Celebrating Internationalisation' delivered the following inspirational speech:

Today 200 people were killed in racial based attacks.

Now, I know its not the most cheerful way to commence a speech. But to me it’s at the very heart of internationalization.

But, what is internationalization?
It is many things to many people. For some it’s taking their way of life and imposing it on the rest of the world. For others it’s the emergence of a global community, one that recognizes and accepts everyone as equal and everyone as unique.

To me, internationalization is creating a brotherhood of all humanity. It’s the recognition, the understanding that we are all human, all one, all brothers and all sisters.

So why open this speech with the no of deaths that occurred today?

The reason is simple.
In life, wherever we look there are symptoms. Or alarm bells, warning signs alerting us to the dangers ahead.

It is these warning signs that keep us healthy, harmonious and living with peace and health!

Everything in life has alarm bells!
Our bodies have alarm bells, our businesses have alarm bells, our planet has alarm bells, and or society, our global society has alarm bells!

A headache is an alarm bell. Pain is an alarm bell. Cancer is an alarm bell, one of the last ones. One that you really want to sit up and listen to!

Alarm bells are designed to wake us up. To alert us to the lack of balance, the lack of harmony and the lack of love in our lives.

911 was an alarm bell, the bali bombings, the Cronulla Riots in Sydney. These are all alarm bells!

But to what? What are they trying to tell us?

Opinions on this are wide are varied. Most blame! Few take responsibility! Even fewer have the courage to seek the real truth.

Here’s what I believe they are trying to tell us…
Mankind is slowly self destructing. You can see symptoms of this everywhere. Disease, poverty, pollution, changing weather patterns, hatred, war, and terrorism.

Our current way of life is in complete disharmony with ourselves, our neighbors and our beloved home, earth!

Our differences, our differing beliefs, our unique way of living, our culture, our language, our religions are not in balance with one another!

We are not working as one united civilization!
We are divided believers, arrogantly rejecting the lives and understanding of those around us.

Why? Because we are ignorant! This is where Nudgee International comes into play!

We are ignorant of other people cultures, religions, needs and beliefs. We are even ignorant of our own beliefs and why we hold them in such high esteem.

The earth was once flat! Did you know that? That was one of our beliefs too!

The earth was flat until word got around that it was not flat! That in fact it was round and not the centre of the universe.

Only when people spoke, when word got out, did this crazy belief begin to shift, and a new understanding began to emerge, and be accepted.

When people talk, when they connect, when they engage with one another, something amazing happens!

I will tell you…

In an instant there is an exchange, often totally subconsciously there is an energetic exchange, whereby each person instantly recognizes WHY the other is the way they are!

It may be subtle it may even be resisted and judged! But it happens. Understanding happens, empathy happens awareness happens, growth happens!

It is this process of understanding that forms the essential ingredient to reconnecting mankind. Reconnecting people to each other, nations to nations!

In the past 10 years Nudgee International has introduced 15,000 international students to 50x that number of Australians.

Nudgee International has been proficient in creating an understanding between Australians and our International guests.

It may appear that Nudgee International is in the language business or the tourism business.
No. Nudgee International is playing a way bigger game then that!
Nudgee International is playing a game of internationalization, a game of creating an international understanding of diversity and uniqueness. Nudgee International is playing for the highest, the greatest of all. I believe…Nudgee International is in the business reconnecting humanity!
